Capture breezy seaside color with items made locally using beach glass

Posted

Sure, the official Rhode Island state mineral is Bowenite, but there’s something about beach glass that truly represents the Ocean State. While not as easy to stumble upon as it once was, sea or beach glass might just be that singular instance where something once carelessly discarded has transformed into a thing of beauty. Also known as “mermaid’s tears”, most authentic pieces started humbly as trash: bottles and jars – shattered, pitted, ground, and tumbled smooth over time by water and sand – resulting in perfectly imperfect shapes. The most common shades are muted aquas, blues, and mints, and today, bags of manufactured versions are available to purchase for crafts and decorating. But whether prospected along the shoreline or bought in bulk, these jagged gems offer a tangible slice of summer that lasts all year long. It is no wonder that artisans around the state are inspired to showcase these coastal treasures in their work.
