Come for the Food, Stay for More Food

The point of a seafood festival is to eat seafood, and in South County this month, there will be an ocean’s worth. For its 34th year running, the Charlestown Chamber of Commerce Seafood Festival will overflow with lobster, crawfish, shrimp, and oysters. If it’s a saltwater creature that you can stuff in a loaf of bread, you will likely find the sandwich you desire. You can roam among the tents and displays, feasting on marine bounty until your belly is full – or your wallet is empty, whichever happens first. There’s nothing like a seaside summer day in South County, set against the tree-lined backdrop of Ninigret Park.

But there’s more to the Seafood Festival than the food. The weekend is packed with live concerts, including tribute bands Welcome to the Jungle and Shot of Poison, and if your stomach can handle the centrifugal force, you’ll find a range of carnival rides as well. We encourage visitors to chow down throughout the day, enter a raffle for a free lobster, then take in the fireworks on August 4. In the meantime, feel free to burn off some calories climbing the rock wall or paddling a kayak. You can even take the whole weekend; for $125, visitors score four nights at the camp ground and two admission bracelets. August 3-5. Ninigret Park, Charlestown
