Compass School Leads the Way

Posted

Since opening in 2002, the Compass School in Kingston has been teaching students to become problem solvers, critical thinkers and active learners. One of its most valuable tools in these endeavors has been the Compass School Farm. The farm teaches kids about environmental sustainability, and has grown enough to be nationally recognized as a Green Ribbon School by the US Department of Education, and to receive a grant of $35,000 from Newman’s Own Foundation to continue their environmental sustainability educational programs.

Director of the Compass School Brandee Lapisky describes the grant as a huge boost to the school’s farm and Science Engagement Center – an outdoor lab designed to teach STEAM concepts in a hands-on setting. “We can’t thank Newman’s Own enough for their support in implementing model solutions to provide fresh food access and nutrition education,” she says. Thanks to the grant, the school’s garden has become the largest in the state and will begin to host visitors for workshops and summer camps focused on learning about the environment. Ultimately the Compass School wants the garden to become a model and host for others in Rhode Island. “We are eager to share what we’ve learned,” Brandee says, “and to make a significant impact on our greater community in the area of environmental sustainability
education.”
