Don’t Waffle on Waffles

Posted

Corporate branding has done a number on waffles. You probably associate them with the standard supermarket variety, catchy slogan and all. But there are a handful of restaurants working hard to reclaim the waffle’s reputation from the frozen food aisle, and that reputation isn’t limited to breakfast.

The Liege waffle is a Brioche-based waffle perfect for satisfying any sweet or savory hankerings you might have. Burgundian Coffee and Waffles is currently operating as a pop-up, bringing delicious waffle creations like In Bacon We Must – topped with ricotta, a fig spread, bacon, and basil – to breweries and coffee shops all over RI, and have a mobile operation on the way thanks to a successfully funded Kickstarter campaign to convert a British double decker bus into a waffle shop on wheels.

In Providence, Waffle has set up shop in the heart of downtown, and they’re on the Liege train, too. They boast wild hybrids like the Pizza Waffle and a waffle ice cream sandwich, creative spins on seasonal fare (imagine a waffle piled with S’mores fixings for the summer months), and gluten-free options. Sometimes a classic is what the doctor ordered, and luckily T’s Restaurants has just that at each of its three locations. Things don’t get much more classic than a Belgian waffle topped with butter and powdered sugar – if it ain’t broke, just eat it – and their Rose Window Waffle, topped with fresh fruit, Greek yogurt, and granola is the best of two different breakfast worlds. Cranston, East Greenwich, and Narragansett

Dante’s Kitchen in East Greenwich deals in a Yankee take on southern-style cooking. They add a nutty twist to their chicken and waffles by topping them with toasted cashews and a Vermont bourbon maple syrup. East Greenwich

For another taste of southern comfort, look no further than Bucktown in Providence. Fried chicken and seafood along with southern sides make up the bulk of the menu, but their Chicken and Waffles is a showstopper, serving up three pieces of fried chicken alongside a Belgian waffle with syrup.
