Food News: Sipping Sunshine at The Sandbar

Galilee’s newest restaurant comes with a side of ferry watching

It’s summer, and what better way to spend it in South County than by grabbing a bite to eat while watching the sunset as the Block Island Ferry chugs along. This is exactly what Chris Willett and Tim and Greig Pelleccione had in mind when they opened The Sandbar in Galilee this past May. “We’re always looking for new restaurant opportunities. All three of us are very hands on,” Chris says.

The three amigos currently own and operate 300 North, located in Saunderstown attached to the Holiday Inn. 300 North is an upscale Italian eatery, but with a down-to-earth atmosphere with prices to match. The Sandbar is attached to the Lighthouse Inn in Galilee, and is geared more towards high quality comfort food.

“Most people that stay at the Lighthouse Inn seem to be visiting from out of town and visiting Block Island. The Rhode Thailand Calamari and the Buffalo Wings are getting rave reviews from locals and visitors alike,” Chris explains. The Rhode Thailand Calamari features fresh calamari that’s been battered and fried and then tossed in a sweet and spicy Asian sauce. The Buffalo Wings are made with The Sandbar’s super secret recipe and can be served at any heat, depending on how daring you‘re feeling that day.

“We also serve an amazing breakfast,” Chris exclaims. “Our chef David Deery, aka Duke, was formerly the owner at Dukes at Middlebridge. He is very well known for his breakfast. We serve omelettes, egg sandwiches, eggs benedicts and more. We even serve a Lobster Benedict – we get the lobster from Point Judith.”

Other highlights at The Sandbar include Baked Cod with lemon butter in a white wine reduction, topped with breadcrumbs, and Sam Adams Beer Battered Fish and Chips made with fresh cod from Point Judith. To wash it all down, they have 11 beers on tap from domestics to IPA’s and are featuring frozen drinks all summer. That includes frozen mudslides and margaritas, just to name a few. You can also expect great fresh seafood, Angus beef burgers, chicken, salads and more.

“In addition to our great food, we will also be featuring live entertainment on the weekends,” says Chris. “Most recently we were lucky enough to feature Hey Nineteen, an 11-piece Steely Dan tribute band and had an excellent turnout. The Sandbar is both a family-friendly restaurant as well as a destination for music and dancing. The Healthy Food Rub

Since 1987, the family-run market Food for Thought has done more than provide a local alternative to the big box food chains; they provide healthy food options unavailable at big box chains such as rare gluten-free and vegan options. And considering that South County doesn’t have a Whole Foods, Food for Thought provides a niche market for health conscious locals and visitors. They also highlight area farms and products such as The Reynolds Barn’s goat cheese and goat’s milk soap, Poblano sauce and salsa, Narragansett Creamery and Pat’s Pasteured, to name a few.

Another notch they’ve recently added to their belt is their new in-store Wellness Room. It features a skincare esthetician, reflexologist, reiki practitioner, massage therapist and instructor on Emotional Freedom Technique and Jin Shin Jyutsu. Have Olive It
If you’re an olive oil and specialty vinegar fanatic, then it’s time to hop in the car and head over to Pawcatuck. Capizzano Olive Oils and Vinegars offers in-store tastings of over 30 different olive oils, balsamic vinegars and flavored oils. Owners Steve and Suzanne Capizzano originally worked in the healthcare industry, and are excited to share their knowledge of the benefits of fresh, delicious olive oil with the community.
Freshly crushed olive oils have high levels of polyphenols, an antioxidant with various health benefits. The olive oils available at Capizzano will have the crush dates clearly labeled on the bottle, as opposed to many grocery store brands that have been sitting on the shelf for who knows how long.
