From J.D. to Jewelry

Like most law school students, Krystal Amaral spent most of her semesters stressed out. “One day, my mom handed me a spool of wire and told me to do something with my hands,” explains Krystal, a born-and-bred Bristolian. In between learning about the Miranda warning and mens rea, she found a true talent for crafting metal bangles and other wire-weave chainmaille jewelry (or “chainmail,” jewelry made with connected metal rings, like armor). When it became clear her work was more than just a hobby, Krystal started showing and selling her work at area craft shows. “I did about 100 shows last year,” she says, “and then I found out this space was opening.” The space was one of a handful at the Mill Pond Shops, a collective of artist galleries, retail shops, and offices located in historic Tiverton Four Corners.

Created Purpose officially opened its doors this past Mother’s Day weekend – an appropriate time as Krystal said her mom Kym did crafts with her and her brother throughout their childhood. When it came to stocking the shelves, Krystal knew exactly the company she wanted her own handiwork to keep. While working the craft market circuit, she founded a community of fellow-makers she dubbed “The Marketeers.” Together, they support one another at shows, cross-promote each other’s work, and collaborate. Today, Created Purpose carries the work of more than 50 artisans in a spectrum of mediums ranging from photography, stationery, cards, watercolor, pottery, glassware, and books to candles, self-care, and pet-care products. Krystal is also dedicated to sharing craft-making with the community, so Created Purpose has a classroom where workshops include watercolor, chainmaille keychain making, container plants, reverse glass painting, canvas sign making, wine glass painting, decoupage, and even beekeeping – plus classes for children, tweens, and teens.
