Rhody Happenings

8 Can't-Miss Foodie Events in Rhode Island

Posted

August 29: The Scales and Tales Dinner Series at Nick’s on Broadway in Providence gives you food and information: a meal of locally-sourced seafood, and afterward, a talk by local fishermen and scientists on the Ocean State’s ecosystems and fishing industry.

September 9: Considering that it’s our state appetizer, it’s safe to say that Rhode Islanders know how to do calamari right. The Rhode Island Calamari Festival at Veterans Park in Narragansett offers a day of fresh local seafood, kids activities and live music - as well as a competition to see which vendor makes the best squid.

September 9-10: We would list every food item available at the 7th Annual Rhode Island Seafood Festival, but let’s keep it short and sweet: it’s got everything from crab rolls to cannolis. Oh, and live music, too. Providence won’t know what hit it, but they’ll definitely taste it.

September 15-17: When they say Taste of Block Island, they don’t just mean food. This event offers three days of discounts at businesses around the island, letting you shop, sleep and even take the island taxi for reduced prices. Of course, food events are planned as well - everything from a build your own sundae to a “Build Your Own Bloody.”

September 21-24: Experience living large at the 12th Annual Newport Mansions Food & Wine Festival, when the lawns of the Elms, Rosecliff and Marble House become the stage for a gala, dinner and, of course, an expansive, world-class wine tasting. Oh, and look out for some celebrity chefs.

September 23: The 3rd Annual Ocean State Oyster Festival in Providence is sure to have some of the best seafood around. A ticket will get you half a dozen oysters and a beverage, not to mention access to all of the other great food, live music and the oyster-shucking contest.

October 14-15: Head to the 27th Annual Bowen’s Wharf Seafood Festival in Newport for one last chance to spend the day at the waterfront before the autumn chill kicks in. The event serves calamari, clam chowder and other Ocean State favorites.

October 20: The Beervana Fest at Rhodes on the Pawtuxet offers an evening of beer tasting, featuring over 250 world-class brews - enough to take up two floors! The ticket includes not just a glass, but also entrance to several educational seminars on the fine art of craft beer.
