Avon Cinema
Starting Friday and playing until next Thursday is Meru, the documentary directed by Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi. Chronicling three mountain climbers attempting to find redemption after failing to conquer the titular mountain's peak years ago, Meru is a harrowing, critically-adored documentation of the fine line that separates courage and recklessness inside every thrill-seeker. This Sundance Film Festival award winner combines breathtaking visuals and a surprising amount of narrative heft to create a singularly thrilling experience.

Also showing at the Avon, for one night only, is the National Theatre's production of The Beaux Stratagem. This cynical comedy follows two debt-ridden charlatans and their attempt to marry into money, only to be impeded by one obstacle: actually falling in love with the targets of their con.

Cable Car Cinema
The Austrian horror film Goodnight Mommy, which has already terrified most of the internet with its trailer alone, will be playing this Friday through next Thursday. Set in an isolated lakeside house, Goodnight Mommy tells the visceral story of two brothers as they deal with the changes their mother has undergone due to her cosmetic facial surgery, both in her appearance and in her behavior. Produced by the infamously punishing Ulrich Seidl, director of 2013's Paradise trilogy, this brutal film specializes in shredding nerves and making skin crawl.

Jane Pickens Theater
Playing until next Thursday is director Paul Weitz's dramedy Grandma, a film that notably features Lily Tomlin's first leading role in 27 years. Taking place over the course of one day, Grandma follows the tough, free-spirited Elle (Tomlin) on an intergenerational road trip with her equally tenacious granddaughter, Sage (Julia Garner). The film touches upon the complexities of grief and family while also providing a performance by Tomlin that has been universally acclaimed for its depth and honesty.
