The Weekend Rundown: August 11-13

August 10-13: The Flickers Rhode Island International Film Festival started up on Tuesday and will be celebrating its 35th anniversary through the weekend. In addition to viewings of shorts and feature-length films, the festival will also have an opening gala, screenwriting workshops and the RI Film Forum, a talkback session with film industry leaders. At the same time, the Providence LGBTQ Festival will be hosting its 18th year of inclusive programming, with a closing night block party at The Dark Lady. For those of you who don’t follow the film festival circuit, you probably don’t know that our little fest is kind of a big deal: It’s a qualifying festival for the Oscars and the BAFTAs.

August 11: Providence-based political punk rockers Downtown Boys and renegade marching band What Cheer? Brigade are teaming up for to debut their new records Friday night at Aurora. Get to the lively downtown spot to two of the state’s wildest, most high energy bands live on stage. 

August 12-14: The Block Island Arts and Artisans Festival will bring the island’s finest artwork to the lawn of the Harbor Baptist Church for everyone to enjoy between beaching and catching the ferry home.


August 12: During the day, AS220 Foo Fest is a kid-friendly block party full of entertainment, DIY crafts and a parade. By night, it’s a bumping dance party, with a killer lineup of local and regional bands, plus delicious cocktails right on the street. All that, plus demos of the cutting edge, genre-bending art happening inside the forward-thinking arts organization.

August 12: The Beach Boys kicked off the first season of concerts at Bold Point Park earlier this week and on Saturday the party rolls on with the annual favorite Waterfront Reggae Festival. The all day event will feature headliners Freddie McGregor, Anthony B, Junior Kelly and other awesome performers. 

August 11–13: 2nd Story Theater in Warren will cast a spell over theatergoers with Bell, Book & Candle. The bewitching tale of a modern-day witch and her bachelor neighbor starts with magic and ends with love. What else do you need?

August 12: The Looff Arts Festival in East Providence is a free, multi-platform event with art, food and live entertainment for the whole family. Held by the East Providence Arts Council, the all-day event at Crescent Park includes multiple stages and entertainment areas and promises a day full of surprises.
