Being Wicked in Providence

Wicked makes its fourth debut at the PPAC

Posted

When you walk into the Providence Performing Arts Center (PPAC) you can immediately feel yourself in awe at how beautiful the theatre is. You would be hard pressed to notice anything else, until you look up and see a mechanical dragon overlooking the auditorium.

The mechanical dragon sets the stage for the touring performance of Wicked which is playing from now until October 8. It takes 30 hours from when the crew begins unpacking to be ready for the curtain to rise, but you can be sure that every single thing will be in place. Wicked is a story on an unlikely friendship from the Wonderful Land of Oz that comes from Elphaba, the wicked witch of the west, and Galinda, who later changes her name to Glinda. The story gets behind the two witches and follows them as they challenge their own destinies.

Wicked has been touring for 865 weeks and is an eleven million dollar production. The show has been translated into multiple languages and has grossed over 2.75 billion dollars for North American companies alone. It has won a grammy and multiple tony awards and will be returning to Providence for its fourth run.

Wicked has everything to boast: an impressive company, a long run, an amazing story, and oh yeah, that mechanical dragon. Audiences are sure to get a delight from the show and become instant fans. Or as Steve Quinn, Company Manager, puts it: “If you’re in New England, you’re ‘wicked,’ right?”

Performances run September 21 - October 8. Tickets can be purchased at PPACRI.org or at the box office. There will also be a lottery for tickets two and a half hours prior to each show.
