Stop and Smell the Tulips

Posted

For those who missed out last year, Wicked Tulips Flower Farm in Johnston is bringing a little bit of Holland back to Rhode Island. After a successful first season, owners Jeroen and Keriann Koeman have been preparing close to one million bulbs, and with careful planning will have two “u-pick” fields. Using his Dutch skills, Jeroen should have their first tulips blooming in early April, three weeks earlier than usual. Once the smaller field has been picked the larger field should be ready to open for early May. The Koemans hope having two fields will allow the farm to stay open for 5-6 weeks instead of the 18 days they were open last season.

Wicked Tulips is the first and only u-pick tulip field in New England. As if last year’s 250,000 tulips weren’t enough, this year will be four times bigger with a large variety of colors, shapes and sizes. We’re all know how unpredictable New England weather can be, so the exact dates of opening will not be announced until April. Tickets can be bought at the door on weekdays but because of limited access to the field, tickets for weekend visits should be bought in advance.
