A Journey Across India Begins at Chaska

Authentic flavors and communal dining make this Cranston restaurant a must-visit

With avid followers from across the state drawn to their menu of seasonal and authentic Indian cuisine, it’s only fitting that “Chaska” means “obsession” in Hindi. Along with three other restaurants owned by Sanjiv Dhar and wife Vandana, Chaska in Cranston invites guests on a culinary journey across regions of the Indian subcontinent, but it doesn’t stop there.

“Our aim is to provide progressive cuisine by mixing ingredients from different parts of the world with Indian flavors to create an intellectually modern take on Indian cuisine,” says Dhar, who founded the restaurant group more than 30 years ago with Kabob and Curry in Providence. This is only after Dhar’s studies brought him all over the world, from India where he cut his teeth as a chef to Austria where he studied and worked in the hospitality industry.

This background and creativity is distilled in the Cranston eatery, where a new Taco Tuesday special coming this month plays with Latin influences, and Date Night Specials on Mondays and Tuesdays tempt couples with offerings like Avocado Sweet Potato Chaat, Lamb Biryani, or Jackfruit Kofta. An intimate night out with friends is enhanced with a sharable round of Punjabi Samosa Chaat – like nachos but featuring mini potato-stuffed samosas and savory toppings – and a round of Tamarind Margaritas.

For Dhar, every detail is an obsession, too. From tempering spices to expert mixology, each dish or drink is designed around authenticity and expanding the palette, but even beyond the food, the Chaska experience celebrates communal dining in a relaxed and joyful setting. Manager Jeffrey Branch and team have created an atmosphere ensuring guests feel the love the moment they step inside.

“Our aim has always been to explore the regional cuisines of India so that our guests can enjoy the distinct styles,” says Dhar. “It’s a style of service where you will feel as if you’re dining in a friend’s home.”
