When Caterina Maina launched Art Noir PVD, she had one clear goal: to shake up Providence’s art scene with vibrant, career-boosting events spotlighting emerging artists. “I wanted to offer something different,” she says. “A fun, affordable event that sparks meaningful networking and opens career doors for artists and creatives alike.”
As an artist herself, Maina understands the challenges firsthand. Many art events cater to established names or those with deep pockets, often sidelining emerging talent and diverse voices. Art Noir flips that model on its head. “There’s no hierarchy – just real support and a shared drive for everyone to succeed.” And succeed they do. Art Noir’s events build intentional connections, linking artists with curators, collectors, and business owners who can showcase their work or hire them for projects.
Community lies at the heart of Art Noir and plays a crucial role in both the event and an artist’s growth. “Without it, navigating the art world can feel lonely and overwhelming,” Maina notes. Art Noir creates a space where artists, curators, and collectors collaborate, inspire, and grow together in Providence’s flourishing art scene. “I truly believe community is essential; it helps us thrive both as artists and individuals.”
One of the biggest challenges for Rhode Island artists is funding. Maina points out that while groups like the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts (RISCA) offer grants, more strategic state-level funding could truly ignite local talent. “We want the talented artists from RISD and Brown to stay, create jobs, and give back to our community,” she says. Art Noir is working to bridge those gaps, connecting artists to paid opportunities and creative roles.
As Art Noir gears up for its next event on November 7, Maina shares, “We’re just getting started.” Her advice for young creatives? “Lean into your community, stay curious, and come to an Art Noir event! I can’t wait to meet you.” For more information and details on Art Noir’s upcoming events, visit their Instagram page at @artnoirpvd.
