The Fish Market

The Galilee institution has been providing Rhode Islanders with the incredibly fresh fish straight off those boats since the 1940s. On a given day, find live lobsters and crabs, scallops and shrimp, filleted and whole fish caught only hours ago. If you’d rather not do the cooking yourself, the market also sells an array of freshly prepared takeaway dishes like stuffed quahogs, cooked lobsters and shrimp and smoked salmon and bluefish. Or, pick out your lobster in the market and have it cooked upstairs in the restaurant for market price plus $5.
Of all of our seafood legacies, the classic Rhode Island clam bake is the most iconic, and the most difficult to prepare. Champlin’s sells clam bakes packaged and ready to cook at home, packed in stainless steel containers that are ready to be steamed on your stove or grill. Per person, a clam bake includes: a chicken lobster, one pound of steamers, one pound of mussels, assorted vegetables, and a sausage-stuffed flounder fillet. The best part is that you can share the wealth with loved ones who aren’t lucky enough to live in Rhode Island. Champlin’s ships clam bakes on ice via overnight delivery to anywhere in the country.
Above the market is Champlin’s Seafood Deck. Some might call it a clam shack, but that’s an understatement. Champlin’s does serve classic New England seafood fare like fried clams, shrimp and scallops, fresh swordfish and flounder, and boiled lobster dinners. While your meal is being prepared, visit their newly remodeled and extended cocktail bar, an area of the restaurant that offers an amazing panoramic view of a quintessential working New England fishing port. Sip on a cocktail while the Block Island Ferry sails past – try Amanda’s fantastic Bloody Mary, or a frozen specialty like a margarita or mudslide, or a draft from their brand new, eight-tap draft system.
