History of the Diner
Jigger’s is a Rhode Island dining institution – and we’re not just saying that because of their classic Johnny cakes, which draw people from all over the state for a true taste of Ocean State culinary heritage. The diner started in 1917, when owner Vilgot “Jigger” Lindberg decided to take over the lunch cart next to his successful hamburger restaurant, Lindy’s. When he moved the lunch cart to Wickford in the 1920s, Jigger built a diner in Jigger’s present location, where men in bow ties served full dinners to crowds that were two and three people deep behind each stool, waiting to get a taste. Jigger’s changed hands several times between the 1950s and the ‘80s, finally closing in 1983. The space served as storage for the adjacent paint store for nearly a decade, until Carol Shriner bought the diner and lovingly restored it to its former glory.
In 2012, Stephen and Karie Head purchased Jigger’s. Karie has a decade of experience owning a restaurant, while Stephen, a retired police officer, has been learning the hospitality business day by day and loves interacting with new and returning customers. Jigger’s makes creative twists on old favorites, and to use the freshest ingredients, with the least amount of preservatives. “We strive to continue the Jigger’s legacy of serving quality diner food,” they say. “Our goal is to serve you delicious, hearty dishes that will bring you back for more.”
