Chef/owner Sanjiv Dhar opened his first restaurant, Kabob and Curry, on Thayer Street in Providence in 1987. The restaurant, serving classically prepared, enticing Indian food, is now Rhode Island’s longest serving Indian restaurant. Dhar – who trained in India, Austria and the US, and is a chef instructor, author and cooking show host – has expanded his restaurant empire with Rasoi in Pawtucket, and Rasa in East Greenwich. He has also recently launched a full service catering company, Indian Accent Catering (find out more at www.indianaccentcatering.com). All three restaurants are popular destinations for those with dietary restrictions, because so many dishes can be made vegan, vegetarian or gluten free. For an authentic taste of Indian cuisine, try one or all of these delicious destinations.

Kabob and Curry
Serving lunch and dinner seven days a week, Kabob and Curry is a lively destina.tion any day or night. It’s located on Thayer Street, in the heart of Providence’s East Side, which is the epi-center of Brown and RISD student culture. In addition to serving classic Indian dishes like saag, tikka masala and vindaloo, Kabob and Curry also serves Tothali combination plates, which are samplers that allow you to experience a lot of different tastes for a low price, and naanini (sandwiches made with naan, and stuffed with either chicken and peppers or paneer cheese and chick peas) and has an extensive selection of gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan choices. Instead of the lunch menu on Sundays, the restaurant offers an all-you-can-eat buffet.

A chic destination on Main Street in East Greenwich, Rasa is Chef Dhar’s newest restaurant. Rasa is a sanskrit word meaning “essence” – and the idea is truly re.flected in the gorgeous interior of the restaurant, the irresistible smells that waft onto the sidewalk, and the excellent cuisine available inside. Open every day but Monday for both lunch and dinner, Rasa serves food with refined Indian flavors. There are vegetarian (and vegan) options like Artichoke and Vegetable Uttapam, with a rice pancake, corn, carrots, onion and cilantro; meat dishes like a whole Tandoori chicken in its classic yogurt, ginger, garlic and yellow chili marinade, and Kashmiri Lamb Kofta meatballs with pistachio and a yogurt sauce; and seafood like Lobster Hawa Mahal, prepared with onion, tomato, ginger and green chili, or Tamarind Salmon, grilled with coriander, cumin and a tamarind glaze.

Rasoi, from the Hindi word for “home,” is a comfortable, relaxed destination for impeccable, healthful food. In Pawtucket’s Oak Hill neighborhood, just after the end of Blackstone Boulevard on the East Side, Rasoi is open daily for lunch and dinner. From their open kitchen comes cuisine from coastal India, where fresh spices are paramount and boiling and steaming are the preferred methods of food preparation, rather than frying. Expect fresh seafood and lots of it – like Bengali Seafood Stew, with shrimp, tilapia, scallops, mussels, butternut squash, spinach and lima beans, with five spices along with vegetarian, chicken, lamb and mutton (Halal) choices. On Saturday afternoons, Rasoi offers and all-you.can-eat vegan, gluten-free buffet; on Sundays, the all-you-can-eat buffet also serves meat and fish. They’re a great way to experience dishes you might not otherwise try – but will soon love.
