Lifestyle Blogger Patty J Dishes on her Fave Spots for Apple Treats

Donuts, pies, crisps – any way you bake it, apples rule autumn. Here's where to get yours!

Posted

My husband and I have started taking our nightly after-dinner walks a lot earlier, and we’re now wearing jackets. For those of you who have been waiting for when you can start flaunting your love of pumpkins, plaid flannels, and all things autumn once again, it’s fantastic news. One local adventure I enjoy thoroughly this time of year is visiting farms in the area and sampling all the delish apple-based treats that they roll out. I think it’s one of the nicest ways to spend a weekday or weekend afternoon around these parts.

Dame Farm, Johnston

I first discovered Dame because of its close proximity to the original location of Wicked Tulips. The hubs and I paid them a visit back in July to check out the sunflowers and had such a marvelous time. Starting now you can pop over and pick your own apples (aka, PYO) or pick up some cider along with a package or three of their cider donuts. They also have a corn maze that you and yours can explore while there and at press time, the activity was a go. How’s that for some classic fall entertainment?

Johnson’s Roadside Market, Swansea

When I first launched my blog, I hired an intern to help out behind the scenes and it was she who first introduced me to this bustling roadside market. Open for 37 years and counting, it continues to be a popular spot for fresh produce and sweets year round. And in the fall, you can be sure to find fresh, tasty apple pies for everyday eating or Thanksgiving.

Pelloni Farm, Ashaway

Looking for the in-cider information about a local gem that you might not be aware of yet? This family-run farm stand in Washington County has baked goods (ice cream and jam, too) that people absolutely adore! It’s another reason, in addition to the leaf peeping possibilities if you time it correctly, to motor over.

Pippin Apple Orchard, Cranston

Whether you’re looking for a picturesque spot where your significant other can snap an autumnal photo of you among the apple trees (exactly what we did last September) or you want a yummy pie without having to spend hours in the kitchen fussing with peeling and cutting or crust-making (which can be tricky), you’ll want to add Pippin to your next afternoon excursion. Their made-fresh-daily pies – apple and beyond – have locals coming back year after year.

Young Family Farm, Little Compton

An afternoon in Little Compton is always a treat! I mean, it’s like something straight out of a picture postcard (Do people still send those, btw?). Young Family Farm, located on West Main Road and dating back to 1997, is usually at the tippity top of our itinerary. People rave about the quality of their PYO apples as well as their homemade pies, galettes, and signature honey apple crisp. You can also grab a few pumpkins to decorate your doorstep with while you’re at it.
