Noises Off Brings Sidesplitting Summer Theater to Wakefield

Contemporary Theater Company returns a fan-favorite farce with flair

If laughter is the best medicine, then Noises Off might just be the cure-all of summer. The Contemporary Theater Company in Wakefield is reviving Michael Frayn’s uproarious backstage comedy for a limited run, and this isn’t their first rodeo – Noises Off delighted audiences in 2009 and 2014, and now it’s back by popular demand.

Often dubbed “the funniest farce ever written,” Noises Off follows a hapless cast of actors trying, and hilariously failing, to keep their play from going off the rails. Between missed cues, misplaced props, and behind-the-scenes drama, this metatheatrical masterpiece turns a simple stage production into utter comedic chaos. “It follows a group of actors as they rehearse and perform a play, with a few complications along the way,” explains director Maggie Cady. “The set literally spins between acts so audiences get a front-row seat to both the onstage and backstage madness.”

Cady, who also serves as the theater’s general manager, brings a deep personal connection to the show. “Noises Off has been one of my favorite shows for many years,” she shares. “I find myself laughing at every rehearsal, even though I’ve seen it all dozens of times now.”

The production features a talented ensemble cast including Sami Avigdor, Clare Boyd, Julia Curtin, Tylar Jahumpa, Kenney Knisely, Edwin O’Connor, Terry Simpson, Valerie Tarantino, and Jaybird Walker. Cady adds, “I grew up performing with my parents in their troupe Laughing Matters. I’ve always believed wholeheartedly that laughing does indeed matter, and this show is guaranteed to leave you feeling lighter after a good dose of laughter.” Noises Off runs from June 27-July 26, with previews June 20-21.
