Rhode Island’s mythical makeover is just getting started. This fall, thanks to a generous $107,500 Placemaking Initiative grant from Commerce RI, two new giant trolls, crafted by world-renowned artist Thomas Dambo, will join South County’s growing Troll Trail. Joining the state’s two existing trolls (both in Charlestown’s Ninigret Park), one will take root in a secret South County location, while the other will settle in North Kingstown, doubling the chances of a troll sighting in the Ocean State.
Dambo returned to Rhode Island on February 24 to scout the perfect homes for these towering, folklore-inspired figures. Eager to continue his work in the region, he shares, “I’m very excited to be back in Rhode Island. I look forward to bringing more trolls to South County this fall.”
And it’s easy to see why. His whimsical, eco-conscious sculptures have enchanted audiences worldwide, blending storytelling, sustainability, and adventure into larger-than-life public art. Crafted entirely from recycled materials, these trolls aren’t just visually striking – they’re proof that beauty can be built from what others discard.
South County Tourism Council president (and one of our 2025 Who to Watch honorees) Louise Bishop sees the project as a win-win for both art lovers and the local economy. “Public art has proven to be a giant attraction that draws visitors of all ages while being mindful of the environment,” she says. “Dambo has a strong following that brings worldwide attention and will boost tourism to the state.”
But the adventure is only beginning. Bishop and Dambo are already dreaming bigger, imagining a sprawling Troll Trail that leads explorers across Rhode Island in search of these hidden wooden wonders. At the heart of their vision? A grand finale featuring “The Thunderstone,” a mysterious, yet-to-be-revealed concept that will tie the entire project together.
With more trolls on the horizon, South County is shaping up to be a must-visit destination for art lovers, outdoor adventurers, and anyone with a penchant for mythical mischief. So grab a map, lace up your hiking boots, and get ready – Rhode Island’s newest residents are on their way! For more information, visit SouthCountyRI.com.
