Rhody Gem: The Thrill of the Hunt for Women’s Clothing at Crosswynds Traders in Narragansett

November 2023

What it is:

A woman-owned retailer that sells name-brand fashions at reduced prices.

Where to find it:

Take a drive to the north end of Narragansett, close to Bonnet Shores, between University of Rhode Island’s (URI) Bay Campus and the Narrow River. You can’t miss the blue ’Gansett surfboard-turned-sign above the window.

What makes it a Rhody Gem?

Christine Woodbine, owner of Crosswynds, had a vision: make high-end fashion affordable. She took excess stock, samples, marked-out-of-stock, and past-season apparel to sell at college sidewalk sales at URI, Providence College, Brown, Rhode Island College, and “Tupperware fashion parties” in peoples’ homes. As her reputation grew, Woodbine was able to set up a brick-and-mortar shop in Narragansett, where everyone who knows about “the secret store” can find permanent deals and trendy clothes for every season. At Crosswynds, inventory moves quickly; each week the shop has something new in stock, so shoppers can feel the “thrill of the hunt,” as Woodbine calls it. With autumn in full swing, Woodbine’s shop has recently stocked up on cozy clothes like “shackets” and cropped cardigans, and chic accessories like quilted and sherpa belt bags. Woodbine also keeps in stock plenty of Narragansett-branded goodies so that tourists can find their perfect souvenir and returning local shoppers can show off their Little Rhody pride. Her affordable fashion concept has been a staple in the state for over 30 years.
