Rhody’s Own Love Bug

A vintage VW Beetle is now a mobile something blue for weddings

Little Blue came very unexpectedly,” says Susan Bogue of Newport. “I don’t even have a website yet. Everything has been over Instagram.” Little Blue is the name of Bogue’s 1963 VW Beetle convertible in original Pacific Blue.

Having fond childhood memories of her grandfather owning the now-classic automobile, Bogue wanted her own Love Bug. After searching for a while, her husband found one. “We bought it for fun and purely sentimental reasons,” Bogue starts. “Literally every time I take her out, strangers pull up next to me at stop signs or lights to ask me about the age of the car and the color. She’s in great shape and the color is really pretty. The white interior makes the blue really stand out.”

Last July Bogue’s daughter was set to be maid of honor in her best friend’s wedding when, you guessed it, COVID struck. Rather than postpone, the couple decided to marry in the groom’s parents’ yard in Jamestown (see our cover story on page 27). Bogue’s daughter asked if she could borrow mom’s car to get the bridal party to the wedding. “When the photographer Brooke Nash saw the car she said, ‘you have to show people!’ so I put together an Instagram account and that was the beginning. I never expected to get such a great reaction,” says Bogue.

Since last summer, the sky blue vintage VW has been part of many engagement, wedding, and baby shower photo sessions. “I bought Little Blue to be my summer car but now it’s primarily for business,” says Bogue. “But I still use it for fun on sunny days when the top can be down!”
