Transforming Neighborhood Dining
The dining scene in Providence got a little more diverse when The Rosendale opened its doors last year. “We wanted to introduce a different type of establishment for our neighborhood,” says Garry Williams, who co-owns the spot with business partner Frank Manfredi Jr. They envisioned a comfortable neighborhood kitchen and bar that catered to professionals, students, families and all visitors to the city. Housed in a historic building that dates back to the early 1900s, the owners took inspiration for the restaurant’s name from its former tenants, Rosendale and Company. “It was one of the first top hat companies in America,” says Frank. Tipping their hat, so to speak, to both the history and modern day transformation of Providence, the owners set out to offer a casual and friendly gastropub.
The menu offers comfort food favorites with a gourmet twist. Take the Smoked Mozzarella Bites, as an example, where the average mozzarella stick gets an artisan makeover: hand-rolled, locally made smoked mozzarella is lightly fried and served with housemade sun-dried tomato sour cream. “Everything is made to order,” Garry says. The crowd-pleasing menu includes flatbread pizzas, garden salads, grilled paninis, burgers and made-to-order sandwiches made with fresh and local ingredients. “We support as many local businesses as we can,” says Frank, adding that they use Narragansett Creamery cheeses and La Salle Bakery bread.
