This year, Rhode Island’s urban neighborhoods are set for a vibrant makeover, thanks to Bloom Rhode Island. The organization is offering mini-grants of up to $500 to gardening enthusiasts in Providence, East Providence, Pawtucket, Central Falls, and Woonsocket. These grants aim to transform sidewalks, parklets, and other public spaces into colorful, eye-catching gardens.
These mini-grants are open to any group of three or more individuals with a green thumb and a vision for beautifying their neighborhood. The only requirements? The project must be on a publicly visible piece of land, and at least one member of the group should have gardening experience.
Last year, Bloom Rhode Island awarded $135,000 in grants to 27 nonprofits and gardening groups. Success blossomed in the form of a cutting flower garden at a food pantry, cheerful landscaping at a senior center, and revitalized public library lawns. This year, the initiative is expanding with up to $170,000 in total funding, including larger project grants for nonprofits.
Applying for a mini-grant is straightforward. Kevin Essington, Bloom Rhode Island’s Programs Manager, notes that the application process takes about 10 minutes, ideal for those with busy schedules. “You don’t need to be a nonprofit or have fancy credentials,” Essington explains. “All it takes is a group of three or more, an idea, and permission to work on the space. We want to make it easy for anyone to bring some blooms to their neighborhood.” Applications are due by 6pm on February 14. For more information or to apply, visit BloomRhodeIsland.org.
