House Beautiful, the oldest continuously published shelter magazine in the US, recently shared a list titled “The Best Home Stores in America, According to House Beautiful Editors” – it’s getting lots of attention, and as advocates of independent retailers, we at Hey Rhody Media Co. couldn’t be happier. Our mission is to shine a bright spotlight on the fearless entrepreneurs whose small businesses help make the Ocean State the unique and wonderful place it is. Hearty congrats to both Tori Jones, Block Island, and Groundwell Guild, Tiverton for making the deserved accolades. Having met with each owner-founders at their fabulous places, I can vouch that the personalities and vision behind each brick-and-mortar are as “unique and magical as the carefully curated gems they stock,” to quote the September 12, 2024 article.

“Summers on Dodge” : Hey Rhody Media Co. Home & Style, June 2024
It was earlier in the year when I read about Tori Jones in another long-standing shelter magazine, Better Homes & Gardens. Flipping through the pages on a lazy Sunday, I suddenly sprang into action upon discovering the designer specializing in summer-themed finds old and new, had a seasonal outpost on Block Island. Tori Jones and I connected in February and I planned an article for June. While I interviewed Jones remotely in April, we were able to meet in person in June when I was on the island for a content day. Jones was kind, demure, and humble, and her shop is everything that House Beautiful states and then some. Visit before mid-October when the shop closes for hibernation.

“A Groundswell of Interest”: The Bay Magazine, December 2020
It’s October 2020. Most of us in non-essential positions continue to work from home, , yet somehow this new cafe “where Provender used to be” in Tiverton is receiving huge buzz for its aesthetics and menu. A near-recluse, I hop in the car to meet David Fierabend for the first time, who gives me a mask-muffled tour at six feet away, a chicken salad sandwich on a house-made baguette (still my favorite) and a cup of coffee, which I enjoy outdoors. One year later when I meet Fierabend again for the first time sans masks, it’s a gloriously giddy celebration of coming through the other side. All things Groundswell Guild – Cafe + Bakery, Garden + Home, and Table + Provisions have turned a sleepy corner into a destination.
