The school book fair is making a comeback, but now it’s targeted toward readers of all ages – The Rhode Island Authors Expo is a book lover’s dream come true. On Saturday, December 2 from 10am to 4pm at the Crowne Plaza in Warwick, hundreds of local authors will display their books and talk about the art of writing. Authors will be selling – and signing – their books on the expo floor as well as presenting panels and workshops on the business of publishing and the creative process. If you love to read or you’ve ever considered writing a book, this free event is the place to be.
Susan Joyce, author of the illustrated children’s book Billy the Rescue Dog, describes why the event is so much fun for readers and writers alike. “The expo is special for a couple of reasons; it’s all about books and writing, so it draws book lovers who like supporting local authors. As an author, I enjoy being surrounded by my peers and sharing ideas. This will be my second year and I can’t wait!”
The smallest state has a rich, diverse collection of writers that make up the Association of Rhode Island Authors (ARIA), the organizers of the event. Every genre is represented, from historical fiction to poetry to the always popular true crime. In addition to the annual expo, ARIA offers events and activities for its members all year long. And, contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to be a published author to join. Membership is less than $50 per year and includes access to ARIA’s Writing Academy, which offers a host of workshops.
New this year, the expo will feature areas called Coffee Clatches where guests can chat with authors informally about a wide range of topics. As expo organizer Mike Squatrito explains, “we want people to be able to sit and relax and spend time talking with our authors about whatever they want.”
Bestselling author Martha Reynolds shares her excitement for the day, saying, “the expo is the biggest event of the year for ARIA. Book lovers from southeastern New England converge to reconnect with favorite authors and discover new ones. I enjoy speaking directly with loyal readers and making new friends.” Her latest novel, I Wish I Had a River, is just one of the many titles that will be available to purchase and have signed.
