'Go for broke': How Japanese Americans in the 442nd broke barriers at home and fought fascism abroad

The history of the 120,000 Japanese Americans forcibly detained by the American government during WWII is often forgotten, especially as survivors of the detention camps dwindle each year. Even though most of the detainees were American citizens by birth -- their parents were often barred from citizenship -- their patriotism and loyalty were widely questioned in a way that Americans of German or Italian descent were not.

Government officials created the detention centers after the Pearl Harbor attack, but the move capped decades of anti-Asian sentiment in California and across the country as white farmers and fishermen claimed the newcomers were taking their jobs by working for lower wages.

Japanese Americans living along the Pacific coast, mostly in California, were forced to sell or abandon their homes and businesses as a wave of anti-Japanese sentiment swept across the United States. And even though most were U.S. citizens, they were given no chance to contest their detentions, as racist policies and legal decisions confirmed the policy of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. And this shocking chapter in American history, for which President Ronald Reagan later apologized, is further complicated by the heroic legacy of the segregated all-Japanese American 442nd Regimental Combat Team.
