Winning wine always tastes a little sweeter, especially when it’s crafted right here on Aquidneck Island. Greenvale Vineyards in Portsmouth is popping corks this season after head winemaker Bill Wilson snagged an impressive lineup of awards for the vineyard’s estate grown wines and its international blend, the Greenvale Malbec.
“It’s a real honor to be recognized alongside so many incredible New England producers,” said Wilson, grinning as he stood among barrels marked with this year’s vintages.
The 2025 Big E Northeast Gold Wine Competition, known for its blind tastings judged by industry experts, poured plenty of praise Greenvale’s way. The vineyard picked up two silver medals for the 2023 Vidal Blanc and 2024 Rosé of Merlot, along with three bronze medals for the 2023 Cabernet Franc Rosé, 2022 Meritage, and 2023 Greenvale Malbec.
As if that wasn’t enough sparkle, Greenvale also took home the Best of Rhode Island Champion Estate Wine award in the 2025 Rhode Worthy Cup. Their 2023 Cabernet Franc Rosé charmed judges, and their Unoaked Chardonnay earned a bronze medal nod. “The Rhode Worthy Cup really shines a light on the unique spirit of Rhode Island makers,” Wilson said. “To win here at home means a lot to us.”
The wins are the latest chapter in Greenvale’s long history. The six-generation family farm has been growing grapes for over 40 years on 27 acres of vines spread across 77 acres overlooking the Sakonnet River. Beyond the medals, the vineyard remains rooted in stewardship and preservation, with the property listed on both the state and national registers of historic places.
For wine lovers, these accolades are just another reason to plan a tasting. Greenvale is open daily for tours and sales, offering visitors a chance to sip history while enjoying world-class Rhode Island wine.
As Wilson put it simply, “Good wine starts in the vineyard, and we’re lucky to grow in such a beautiful place.” For more information, visit Greenvale.com.
