'He's my hero': 80-year-old rescues stranded drivers in blizzard after social media SOS

REGINA, Sask. — An 80-year-old Canadian man guided multiple cars to safety during a severe snowstorm in an act of kindness one driver describes as heroic.

Shannon St. Onge was returning from what was supposed to be a quick trip to her office on Jan. 31 when a blizzard hit the area earlier than expected.

She found herself in a rural area and in whiteout conditions. Roads and highways became treacherous with snow and ice.

“I later found out that this kind of storm is called a ‘Saskatchewan screamer,'" she said. "It comes on remarkably fast and with extremely high winds.”

St. Onge tried to call 911 but says she couldn’t get through.

“The first responders were overwhelmed with phone calls and I received a message stating, ‘we cannot take your call at this time,’” said St. Onge.

That’s when she knew she was in trouble.

“I began to panic,” she said. “I began to worry about getting hit by an oncoming vehicle, getting buried in a snowbank or a snowdrift, having my tailpipe blocked by the snow ... I was really worried I wouldn't make it home to my children.”

St. Onge posted a message on her community’s Facebook page and she believes what happened next saved her life.

The social media SOS eventually found its way to André Bouvier Sr., the retiree behind the rescue who lives on a farm nearby.

"He's my hero," said St. Onge.

Bouvier says the storm was the worst he'd ever seen; he could barely see in front of him, even with a flashlight. As he walked, he shielded his face from the blowing snow with his mittens. Bouvier says he tried to stay calm as he trudged from his farm to the main road in dangerous conditions to find the stranded motorists.
