History shines brighter when everyone’s story is told, and thanks to Alcove RI, Rhode Island now has a place dedicated to making that possible. Opening Saturday, January 10, 2026, at 189 Broadway, Alcove RI will debut as the state’s first feminist cultural center, creating a haven for women and gender expansive people to connect, recharge, and celebrate.

The newly renovated space is designed with purpose. The first floor welcomes the public, while the second floor, called the Haven, is reserved for members seeking community and respite. Membership perks pair with public programs, all supported by an accessible pricing model that includes need-based scholarships.

At the heart of Alcove RI’s mission is rewriting a more complete history by combatting The Matilda Effect, the historic erasure of women’s accomplishments. The Biographical Library, already stocked with more than 2,000 biographies, will eventually grow to over 7,000 volumes. Nearby, a portrait gallery unlike any other will showcase women and gender expansive figures from Rhode Island and beyond. Its debut exhibition, Founders and Inventors Who Shaped Our World, features 33 new works by Rhode Island artists alongside historical reproductions.

“I am excited and honored to be part of bringing Alcove RI to Rhode Island,” said Amanda E. Strauss, Founding Executive Director. “Women and gender expansive people deserve to have a space of connection, respite, and joy that furthers our collective strength and momentum. When we Alcove to create an intergenerational community, we transform the world around us and what we ourselves think is possible to accomplish.”

Strauss is supported by a powerhouse founding board, dedicated staff, and a team of women designers, builders, and artists who brought the vision to life. Architect Charlotte Breed Handy of CBH Architect, LLC shaped the building, while Bernice Wahler Landscapes designed the gardens, and New England Construction managed the build.

“Space that is wholly dedicated to creating community for women and gender expansive people is vanishingly rare, yet deeply needed,” Strauss added. “Alcove RI is a haven and will propel collective momentum for generations to come.” Tours are available ahead of the opening.
