Jury selection begins in federal hate crimes trial for Ahmaud Arbery's killers

BRUNSWICK, Ga. — Jury selection begins Monday in the federal hate crimes trial for the three men convicted of murdering Ahmaud Arbery.

Travis McMichael, 36, his father, Gregory McMichael, 66, and their neighbor, William "Roddie" Bryan, 52, each face one count of interference with rights due to Arbery's race and attempted kidnapping.

The McMichaels are also charged with one count each of using, carrying and brandishing — and in Travis McMichael’s case, firing — a gun during and in relation to a crime of violence.

Federal prosecutors argue the McMichaels and Bryan violated Arbery's rights when they willfully interfered with his right to enjoy a public road in the Satilla Shores neighborhood of Brunswick and did so because of Arbery's race. Arbery, 25, was Black; the McMichaels and Bryan are white.

In January, the McMichaels and Bryan were sentenced to life in prison for Arbery's murder, with an additional 20 years without the chance for parole for the father and son. Bryan has the possibility of parole.

Under federal law, a hate crime is defined as one motivated by bias against race, color, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity or disability. The U.S. Department of Justice began prosecuting federal hate crimes after the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1968.
