The ocean usually sets the scenery around here. At Ocean State Crossing, it sets the challenge. On August 15, paddlers and rowers will trade the usual Rhode Island day on the water for a 15-mile test that passes some of the state’s most recognizable coastal landmarks, including Fort Adams State Park and Point Judith Lighthouse.
Presented by Summer Safe Ocean State, the crossing brings elite and recreational athletes from around the country to compete on stand-up paddleboards, surfskis, outrigger canoes, kayaks, and coastal rowing boats. The exact start and finish points will be determined closer to race day, but the task is simple enough to understand: cover a considerable stretch of Rhode Island under human power.
Simple, of course, is not the same as easy.
The race has grown into a major open-water endurance event, but its impact extends well beyond the finish line. Summer Safe Ocean State uses the event to support water safety, cancer prevention, and community health initiatives throughout Rhode Island.
Over the past two years, the organization reports more than $100,000 in community impact. That work includes installing public-access AED stations at Rhode Island State Beaches and placing AEDs aboard marine vessels used by state and local public safety agencies. This summer alone, two outdoor AED stations were added at Fort Adams State Park, while Rhode Island State Police marine vessels received two more units. The organization also supports the Partnership to Reduce Cancer in Rhode Island.
That safety focus follows competitors onto the course. State and local agencies, volunteers, and community partners help support the crossing, with the Newport Fire Department’s Marine 6 Unit among those scheduled to be out on the water.
For everyone staying comfortably on dry land, Ocean State Crossing offers a reminder that Rhode Island’s coastline can be more than a backdrop for beach towels and sunset photos. During the crossing, it becomes the course itself, with athletes seeing familiar landmarks one paddle stroke at a time. Visit OceanStateCrossing.com for registration, race information, and updates.
