Opinion: Ryan Cochran-Siegle continues his family's winning ways at Beijing Winter Olympics

BEIJING – When your mom is an Olympic champion, and the 50th anniversary of her big win is coming up, some recognition of the milestone is in order.

Do you throw her a party? Buy her a present? Get her flowers?

In Ryan Cochran-Siegle’s case, you add another Olympic medal to the family collection.

Three days shy of the day Barbara Ann Cochran won gold in slalom at the 1972 Olympics in Sapporo, Japan, Cochran-Siegle won silver in the super-G. His medal was the first at the Beijing Games for the American skiers, and assured that the U.S. men won’t leave these Olympics empty-handed as they did four years ago.

“She just told me, 'Good luck, have fun,’” Cochran-Siegle said. “I’ve heard a lot of advice over the years from my Mom that I’ve been able to channel that added up to this day.”

Barbara Ann Cochran, center, of the United States, winner of the Winter Olympic women's slalom gold medal, stands with Florence Steurer (15), the bronze medalist, and Daniele Debernard (6) the silver medalist both from France, in Sapporo, Japan, on Feb. 11, 1972.

To say skiing is the family business is no exaggeration.

Some 60 years ago, Ginny and Mickey Cochran, Cochran-Siegle’s grandparents, built a hill on their property in northwestern Vermont so their four children would have a place to ski. They soon opened it up to any kids who wanted to come, and Cochran’s Ski Area now operates as a non-profit “to provide area youth and families with affordable skiing and snowboarding, lessons and race training, in the Cochran tradition.”
