Ottawa police gave notice to protesters remaining at the logistics camp

Of the so-called “Freedom Convoy” at 300 Coventry Road to clear the area including vehicles, toilets, cooking/heating implements, signs and structures of any kind.

According to the police any person, or vehicle, that is found in the parking lot of RCGT Park arena near the Vanier Parkway after 4:30 p.m. risks arrest and a fine of up to $2000.

4 p.m.: Ottawa interim police chief Steve Bell said officers had made 191 arrests and laid 389 charges since Thursday, with those numbers expected to climb into Sunday evening. Streets that had been jammed with trucks, conflict and protesters until Saturday night were mainly empty on Sunday, although some of them — especially close to Parliametn Hill — were still closed to the public.

Police said they had seized and towed 76 vehicles. And by working with financial institutions under new measures in the Emergencies Act, 206 different accounts had been frozen so far.

A command centre that protesters had set up outside the downtown core on Coventry Road was being dismantled on Sunday afternoon, and police had served protesters who remained there with a warning about trespassing.

Bell says Ottawa may be calmer now but is still nowhere near its normal state of peace and smooth operations. He said police presence and fencing will remain intense as authorities move to a new phase of their operation: preventing the protesters from amassing elsewhere and returning to seize control of Ottawa’s streets.

3:52 p.m.: Asked when will the return to normal happen, Ottawa’s interim police chief Steve Bell couldn’t say when, saying the streets need to be protected so that an occupation can’t start again.

He said the protest supply camp on Coventry Rd., east of the main downtown sites, was being demobilized. Police were delivering trespass notices to the protesters there. There have been reports of protesters moving to other sites outside the city. The chief said police are monitoring anyone who might be massing to come back.

3:49 p.m.: Building trust is “a vital next step” for police and partners, Chief Bell said in response do a question. The chief took over from Chief Peter Sloly amid the crisis.

3:40 p.m.: (updated) Ottawa interim police Chief Steve Bell told a news conference that checkpoints remain throughout the city for now, and “unlawful protester activity” is still being monitored. He said there were clashes last night around Bank Street and Queen Street.

Charges laid so far during the clearing of the occupation include assault, possessing a weapon, obstructing police, mischief, attempting to disarm a police officer.

“We promised that we would return our city to normalcy” and we’re getting closer to that goal with every hour, he said.

1:02 p.m.: Ottawa police said that of the 191 arrests since Thursday, 103 people were charged. The main charges are mischief and obstruct. Eighty-nine of them have been released with conditions that include a no-go zone. The others have been released unconditionally.

12:08 p.m.: The Star’s Jenna Moon and Ben Cohen report on the scene late Sunday morning:

The crowds are gone. The trucks have been cleared from Ottawa’s streets. It’s a far cry from the occupation that has plagued the nation’s capital for more than three weeks, where supporters of the purported “Freedom Convoy” honked their horns and clogged thoroughfares with big rigs. Instead of transport trucks, police vehicles now line the Parliamentary Precinct, behind fences that were erected throughout the day Saturday. Police checkpoints dot the city centre, and residents must present identification showing they live or work in the area in order to move past the barricades.

It’s a stark difference from Saturday, when large numbers of convoy supporters faced off against law enforcement dressed in riot gear who hailed from across the country. Just a smattering of demonstrators remain in Ottawa’s Centretown. Those who remain could be seen heckling law enforcement, and Star reporters witnessed a group of participants dressed in snowsuits at the intersection of Queen and Bank streets writing messages of support to truckers in Sharpie on concrete barriers.

12:04 p.m.: Ontario’s police watchdog says it’s investigating two incidents stemming from Saturday’s massive enforcement operation to clear anti-government protesters from downtown Ottawa.

The Special Investigations Unit says preliminary information suggests a Toronto police officer on horseback allegedly had an encounter with a 49-year-old woman resulting in an undisclosed, serious injury.

They say they’re also looking into the use of anti-riot weapons, which they say were deployed by members of the Vancouver Police Department on Saturday evening.

The SIU says no serious injuries were reported during that interaction. It’s asking anyone who may have been struck by a projectile to contact the unit.

The alleged incidents come amid an enforcement blitz that Ottawa police say has resulted in 191 arrests since it began on Thursday.

11:35 a.m.: The Star’s Ben Cohen reports that on Ottawa’s Queen Street, right outside the police barrier, about a dozen convoy supporters are left, whooping and crying “Freedom!” and screaming at passing police.

11:30 a.m.: Ottawa police say the number of people arrested over their participation in anti-government protests continues to climb as conditions in the capital region begin to calm.

The streets around Parliament Hill are the quietest they have been in weeks, but a heavy police presence remains all around the area. Fencing surrounds multiple blocks in the parliamentary district and officers at police checkpoints are monitoring car and foot traffic into the entire downtown core.

Ottawa police say they’ve arrested 191 people since Thursday as officers from across Canada were brought in to bring an end to the demonstrations that blockaded downtown Ottawa since Jan. 28.

Most streets in the parliamentary district are now clear of trucks and other vehicles, though some remain.

11:04 a.m.: Toronto police say the road closures downtown that were in place yesterday remain in place. They have closed off a perimeter around hospital row and Queen's Park as they brace for more potential protests this weekend. Toronto police tweeted on Saturday that road closures are in from Spadina Avenue to the west, Church Street to the east, Davenport Road to the north and Queen Street to the south.

9:23 a.m.: Reporters on the scene report a quiet start to the morning on the main streets near Parliament, as cleanup crews do their work. Police officers and mounted units are setting up in the area in case of confrontations with protesters. The city’s checkpoints remain in place.

9:09 a.m.: Ottawa police tweeted this morning that they continue to maintain a police presence around the area where the protests occurred. “We are using fences to ensure the ground gained back is not lost.” Police officers were seen entering the area in preparation for the day’s actions.

5:47 a.m.: Police are poised for a third day of actively confronting protesters in downtown Ottawa in hopes of finally ending the weeks-long occupation of the national capital.

Yesterday, hundreds of officers, some in full riot gear and deploying pepper spray, moved more aggressively to clear the area in front of Parliament Hill of people and vehicles illegally protesting COVID-19 public health measures.

Steve Bell, Ottawa’s interim police chief, said officers had little choice but to use greater force in the face of demonstrators who ignored their repeated warnings to clear the area they had occupied for just over three weeks.

Police said 47 more people were arrested, bringing the total to 170 since Thursday, while dozens of vehicles, including many large trucks, either pulled out on their own or were towed away.

They also said they deployed mid-range impact weapons last night after protesters allegedly assaulted officers with weapons, though no serious injuries on either side were reported.

Sunday 5:46 a.m.: Some of the most high-profile organizers of protests against government and COVID-19 mandates in Ottawa are facing charges that include mischief and counselling to commit mischief. What does that actually mean? Here’s a look at the significance of mischief charges and the consequences the people charged may face:
