A cosmic journey in Olneyville begins with the swing of a golf club! Siblings Doug and Hannah Abelow recently brought their eclectic minigolf vision to life, and it’s a technicolor space-themed dream world complete with little green aliens, claw machine prizes, glittering disco balls, and surprises at every hole.
“The Dusty Planet is an artist-made, nine-hole indoor space adventure miniature golf course, arcade, and bar,” explains Doug of the fun new concept that just made contact on planet Earth – right in Olneyville Square. Adds Hannah, “we’re Providence's only galactical themed bar and minigolf course.”
The creative attraction is a long time in the making, having begun construction last year to build out an arts-forward, wholly nostalgic concept that combines whimsical game play with nightlife vibes. The Abelows were deliberate about working with the local community of fabricators and artists to create a space that’s perfect for both a family-friendly outing with the kiddos and for adult friend groups to gather and tee up over cold beers and pop-up cocktail and food vendors like Puggles Grilled Cheese, with an affordable entry cost. And the colorful, cosmic-imbued aesthetic is part of the allure – while waiting for your turn to take a swing, guests can admire out-of-this-world murals bathed in rainbow lights and find cool merch like crystal snakes from Pretty Snake.
The Dusty Planet ushered in National Mini Golf Day with a lively grand opening party on May 10, and has since been welcoming all walks of life to tee up and try their hand at arcade games. Their inaugural tournament invited qualified golfers to compete for cash prizes and plaques for the lowest score and most aces categories. More competitions are in the works, but your skills need not be up to par to enjoy a summer filled with special events at The Dusty Planet, plus opportunities to host your own party at a venue from outer space!
