The Rhode Island singer-songwriter sets the tone ahead of For the First Time, Again and a packed 2026 tour

Before the packed tours, glowing reviews, and a Rough Trade deal, Tyler Ballgame was doing what plenty of local musicians know well. He was grinding it out close to home, playing cover gigs, chasing momentum, and wondering when the next chapter would finally arrive. Now, the Rhode Island–bred singer-songwriter is stepping fully into that moment with Matter of Taste, a new song and video that feels equal parts release and arrival.

Out now, Matter of Taste is the latest single from For the First Time, Again, Tyler Ballgame’s debut album, set for release on January 30, 2026, via Rough Trade Records. A hook-forward rocker, the track highlights what fans and critics alike call the “Ballgame voice,” an effortlessly confident croon that has already earned serious praise. That includes a five-star live review from The Times of London and a “mesmeric” nod from The Guardian.

Lyrically, Matter of Taste wrestles with the desire to be loved while learning not to take rejection personally. Lines like “Don’t let me go to waste” land with vulnerability, while the chorus brings clarity. “That’s not a rejection of me as a person, it’s just a matter of taste,” Ballgame explains. He frames the song as a reminder that not every “no” needs to cut deep.

That perspective didn’t come easily. During the pandemic, Ballgame found himself stuck and uncertain, questioning whether music would ever fully open its doors. Still, the pull toward performance never faded. “I think I’m meant to sing for people,” he says, a belief shaped early by a classically trained, music-teacher mom and later reinforced during his time at Berklee College of Music.

Eventually, Ballgame took a leap that changed everything. After landing an office job he applied for online, he moved west and traded familiarity for risk. Weekly open mics in Venice Beach turned into community, then momentum. “The move was the best thing that ever happened to me,” Ballgame says. “It opened my eyes to the nature of risk and the nature of betting on yourself.”

That bet paid off when Ballgame teamed up with producers Jonathan Rado and Ryan Pollie. Together, they shaped For the First Time, Again into a warm, analog-rich record filled with soulful rhythms, lush harmonies, and classic rock textures. The album, Ballgame says, centers on hope, healing, and learning how to dissolve into experience.

In 2026, Ballgame brings that experience on the road with tour dates across the U.S., the U.K., and Europe, alongside Alabama Shakes, St. Paul & the Broken Bones, and The Head & The Heart.
