Five hundred lightings in, WaterFire Providence still draws a crowd and then some. This season, the city’s signature river ritual returns with a milestone lineup packed with big celebrations, meaningful moments, and a few fresh surprises.
The festivities begin May 30, when a full lighting coincides with Rhode Island School of Design’s commencement weekend and marks the organization’s 500th lighting. From there, the season unfolds in a steady rhythm of full, partial, and basin lightings that carry the glow from spring through winter.
This year, WaterFire invites the public to step into the action. The organization will offer 500 torchbearer positions at select events, giving participants the chance to help light the fires and take part in the tradition firsthand. The behind-the-scenes role turns spectators into storytellers.
“Each WaterFire season reminds us of the power of art to bring people together,” says Executive Director Mark Allan. “WaterFire will continue to celebrate the creativity and unique spirit of Greater Providence, creating a shared experience that unites our communities.”
Returning favorites anchor the season, including evenings dedicated to educators, veterans, and breast cancer survivors, along with a community paddling night that celebrates Rhode Island’s clean water. A Fourth of July lighting commemorates 250 years of American independence, while October highlights United Way of Rhode Island’s centennial.
Beyond the riverbanks, the WaterFire Arts Center expands the experience with immersive exhibitions, including RIFT and America, Unfinished?!, each designed to spark reflection and connection.
