The village celebrates 40 years of holiday magic with lights, laughter, and a touch of nostalgia
There’s something about Wickford in December that feels like stepping into a storybook. This year, the historic village celebrates the 40th anniversary of its beloved Festival of Lights, running Thursday, December 4 through Sunday, December 7, and locals are ready to make spirits bright.

The celebration kicks off Thursday evening with the lighting of the tree at Updike Park, where thousands of twinkling white bulbs turn the village into a glowing winter wonderland. “It’s a beautiful, heartwarming tradition that brings people together year after year,” said Julie Beebe of the Wickford Village Association.

Throughout the weekend, visitors can stroll through the cobblestone streets and admire shop windows dressed in their holiday best as merchants compete for the title of most festive display. The event captures the magic of old-fashioned holiday shopping, where personal service and one-of-a-kind gifts take center stage. “It’s like stepping back in time,” Beebe said. “People come to reconnect with the joy and simplicity of the season.”

Santa will make his grand entrance by boat at the Town Dock on Brown Street, an Ocean State twist on tradition, thanks to the help of Safe Sea and a crew of kayaking “reindeer.” He’ll be joined by families and carolers ready to spread cheer along the waterfront. Kids (and kids at heart) can join the Elf Parade on Saturday and hop on a horse-drawn hayride through the village while sipping cocoa from the Boy Scouts or grabbing a bite from one of Wickford’s cozy restaurants.

Live music, dancing, and community spirit fill every corner of the village as Wickford transforms into what organizers lovingly call a “Dickens-like” holiday destination. Many shops will stay open until 9pm on Friday and Saturday, giving visitors more time to browse, mingle, and enjoy the glow.
