In an age of misinformation, local, community-based journalism is essential. Yet many journalists struggle to connect to local outlets where their stories can be told. At Writer as Witness: Cultivating Community Journalism, we’ll learn from local on-the-ground journalists about how they have built their networks and secured bylines—from The Valley Breeze to The New York Times—demystifying the freelance process with practical advice on pitching your first outlet, compensation, and overcoming access barriers in the media industry. Following the panel, local writers will have a chance to meet one on one with local editors from publications such as The Boston Globe, EcoRI News, The New Bedford Light, Ocean State Media, RI Monthly andThe Providence Eye.
This event is made possible in part by funding from the City of Providence’s Department of Arts, Culture + Tourism.
