Right now, your beauty routine might have fallen to the wayside – and who can blame you when salons and spas are closed and sweatpants reign supreme? But when your days seem clouded with stress, anxiety, and uncertainty, self-care rituals are essential to both mental and physical health.

“Sticking to a routine of getting dressed and doing hair and makeup will make you feel better and proud of yourself for staying motivated while being in your house,” affirms Jennifer Simpson, owner of Whole You Beauty Studio in Providence. While the studio is closed to clients, the team is still there for anyone in need of a Zoom consult or little beauty pick-me-up, including some fun filmed tutorials by Simpson. Today, the styling maven shares with us some simple tips to show some love for your hair, skin, and soul.

Mood Swings

“If it’s a rainy day,” begins Simpson, “throw on a pop of color on your lips.” Or, if anxiety is making it hard to think, “add lavender to a quick scalp massage to help the blood flow and ease stress.” You don’t need to do your full getting-ready routine, she says, but sticking to one or two items can add balance to your day (and lessen the shock when you return to a regular morning schedule!).

Luscious Locks

SimpsonSimpson emphasizes the importance of nurturing your hair, and her advice is simple: “Add a quarter-size amount of coconut oil to your conditioner and let it sit for an extra 20 minutes.” This is also the perfect time to practice mastering upstyles, she adds, like braids and buns, which then transform your locks into no-heat waves as an added bonus.

Glow Up

Simpson recommends combining coconut oil and coffee grounds for an easy at-home mask; leave on for 20 minutes to rehydrate and revitalize skin. “When done, add a little makeup such as highlighter to your cheekbones to feel more refreshed.”
