Doll Garden Party with Samantha at Hearthside House Museum

Posted by khartley

Hearthside House's popular Garden Party for girls and their dolls, accompanied by an adult, takes place on the grounds of the majestic Great Road stone mansion. The experience takes guests back to 1904 to meet Samantha Parkington, an American Girl Doll character, as she enjoys summertime and garden activities.

Mother and daughter team Lisa and Thea Minca, will provide an informative and delightful presentation that both girls and their moms can learn from.  An extensive display of the dolls is shown as part of the presentation, with the summertime accessories that went along with Samantha for her past time activities.  After stepping back in time to Samantha's world of 1904, girls will have a craft activity to create their own accessory to take home.  Samantha was one of the historical dolls which began the American Girl Doll in 1986.  The story of Samantha Parkington, a 9 year old living at her grandmother’s mansion in 1904, similar to Hearthside and which got its name in 1904, and whose family at that time included a young girl.

Some old-fashioned play time is included as the girls try their hand at some lawn games including Graces, where a hoop is thrown and caught with a stick, rolling a large hoop, and playing croquet. Summertime refreshments of lemonade, iced tea, and sweet treats are also featured. As part of the festivities there will also be prizes and a raffle. Shopping in the Gift Shop is part of the experience as well, since it is stocked up with a beautiful array of doll clothing and accessories for sale. Each child/adult pair or group will receive a photo taken of them at the event as a memento of this special time.

Guests will also be invited to explore two floors inside the museum to see the current special exhibit, The Joy & Wonder of Miniatures, featuring charming miniatures of everyday items, historical artifacts, dollhouses, and even a model of a giant Ferris Wheel from the 1904 World's Fair.

Girls ages 6 and older are invited to attend, accompanied by an adult. Tickets must be purchased by August 3 through hearthsidehouse.org.  There are two seatings to choose from at either 12 noon-1:45 or 2:15-4:00. This informal event is held rain or shine, under a tent.

Hearthside is located at 677 Great Road, Lincoln.   Proceeds support the museum and its programming, which is under the direction of the volunteers of the Friends of Hearthside who work to preserve the history along Great Road for future generations.
