Holiday Shopping Goes Behind the Work at the Mill at Shady Lea

Holiday Open Studios invites shoppers inside more than 30 North Kingstown artist workspaces December 5–6 for one-of-a-kind gifts and a closer look at where the work begins

The Mill at Shady Lea is giving holiday shoppers access to something a regular retail trip can’t: the studios behind the work.

For two days in December, more than 30 artists and artisans inside the historic North Kingstown mill will open their workspaces for Holiday Open Studios, giving visitors a chance to shop while getting a closer look at the creative community behind the pieces.

The mix is broad enough that shoppers won’t need much of a plan. One studio might hold handmade jewelry or blown glass, while the next leads to paintings, photography, sculpture, pottery, rugs, fiber art, rare books, or art relics. With that much variety under one roof, even a carefully planned gift list has room for a few surprises.

The setting makes browsing feel different from a typical holiday market. Instead of moving past a row of temporary vendor tables, visitors make their way through the mill room by room, stepping into the spaces artists use throughout the year. Each open door introduces another medium, another workspace, and another reason to slow down before moving on.

That also gives shoppers a little more context for what they’re buying. A finished piece sits alongside the place where the artist develops ideas, stores materials, and works on what comes next, making the experience as much about discovering the people inside the mill as checking names off a list.

The practical side is refreshingly simple, too. Admission and parking are free, and purchases are tax-free, leaving shoppers free to focus on finding something one of a kind rather than calculating the cost of the outing. For anyone hoping to keep more of their holiday spending local this year, the event puts dozens of Rhode Island creatives within a few hallways of one another.

Visitors are also encouraged to bring an item for the North Kingstown Food Pantry to help local families prepare holiday meals, extending the weekend’s community focus beyond the studios themselves. Holiday Open Studios runs December 5-6 from 10am-4pm at the Mill at Shady Lea, 215 Shady Lea Road in North Kingstown.
