Celebrating Broad Street

Teatro en El Verano, the summer touring theatrical partnership between Rhode Island Latino Arts and Trinity Repertory Company, announces a new production by Orlando Hernández, titled La Broa’ en Tu Barrio (La Broa’ in Your Neighborhood); the play draws from the true tales of Latino Rhode Islanders who have made Rhode Island their home, as documented by oral historian Marta V. Martínez in her book Nuestras Raíces (Our Roots).

La Broa’ made its world premiere at Trinity Repertory in January 2024, receiving rave reviews and a near sold-out run. The new adaptation, La Broa’ en Tu Barrio, will travel across the state from July 3 to August 2, staging stories from Rhode Island’s Latino community at the sites where they happened. Perhaps most significantly, the opening night performance will take place on La Broa’, Broad Street, itself.

“As La Broa’ returns to the community through Teatro en El Verano, it comes full circle,” Martínez said. “The play is not only performed for the neighborhood that inspired it – it belongs to it. It is a reminder that history lives in conversation, and that storytelling begins when someone takes the time to ask.” The summer series begins Friday, July 3, at Roger Williams Park. Admission is free, and no registration is required. Please bring your own chair and picnic blanket, if desired. All performances begin at 6:30 pm unless otherwise specified. Noise in the North End

How loud is the North End? In April, the North End got a noise meter, thanks to the Providence Noise Project, whose slogan is “Noise is the New Smoking.” This is the Project’s third sound monitor in the city and a great way to get a better sense of the noise levels in our neighborhood. By understanding how loud it actually is, we can work together to make our community a healthier and more enjoyable place to live. Previously, in Spring 2025, the Noise Project deployed the first in a series of residential sound monitors on the West Side, designed to identify both baseline noise levels and daily/weekly/seasonal noise trends around Providence. In Fall 2025, they added a second monitor on the East Side of the city, with more to come this year. Sidewalk and signage for a busy summer

With nearly 400,000 visitors coming to Providence during the month-long World Cup events, we expect many of them will walk the Mile of History, and we are currently working with the city on our sidewalk restoration and signage installations. Due to unforeseen circumstances, there was no spring gathering, but MoHA did sponsor the Rhode Island Historical Society Golden Ball gala last month. Looking ahead to MoHA’s Annual Meeting on November 1, there will be many things to celebrate. – Submitted by Charles Hewitt, MoHA Secretary
