Imagery of frightened people running from something is common this time of year. Scary movies pop up in theaters and on cable TV like the creatures that their heroes and victims are trying to outwit, promising scares by the dozen if you dare to peek through tightly pinched eyelids. But if you’re an adrenaline junkie who needs something more than another Nightmare on Elm Street marathon to get you in the spooky spirit, why not find out if you have what it takes to outrun whatever goes bump in the night.
The Monster Dash 5k is an annual race through downtown Providence that has two things going for it if you prefer your exercise with an ample dose of fear. One, it gives participants a chance to (legally) run through downtown’s RIPTA tunnel – 2,000 feet of echoing concrete and mood lighting. Two, that tunnel is filled with zombies, which is more incentive to get the lead out than meeting your FitBit’s daily step quota if you ask us. Costumes are encouraged and a kid-friendly 1k is on the schedule for little boils and ghouls.
It’s all in good fun of course; to the best of our knowledge, these aren’t real zombies, but why take the chance? Run! October 28, Providence
