Two floors of curated country home decor and seasonal gifts, ranging from farmhouse accents to gourmet jarred preserves and bath and body products. This month’s displays are decked out in Halloween and autumn accessories.
Located in the charming country setting of historic Chepachet Village, find the shop nestled among a row of antique stores and the Glocester Heritage Society.
Step foot inside the double wooden doors and feel transported to a 19th century Americana mercantile, complete with a candy counter, soft vintage lighting, and a wall of wax candles. Arguably the oldest continuously operating general store in America, Brown & Hopkins Country Store brings old-fashioned hospitality to selling locally made gifts and artisan wares. In this age of social distancing, a new ecommerce website allows for online shopping, and Facebook videos offer a glimpse inside if you have to stay home. Fortunately, their doors are open for guests to indulge in the full experience of meandering through displays of honey, maple syrup, and soaps, arranged around country home pieces like braided rugs and vintage table linens. Says an out-of-state visitor longing for a return journey, “As soon as I walk through the door, something magical would happen. The ambiance of the shop is so therapeutic.”
