This weekend checks all the boxes: carnival rides, outdoor concerts, grilled eats, and camaraderie. Whether you leave the house for books and beers or boating outings, arts happenings or wellness experiences, and much more, the Ocean State gears up for fall with all kinds of fun.

Talks, tours, panel discussions, and parties are all part of DESIGN WEEK RI, with a kickoff party at Moniker Brewery on Friday, followed by open studios and workshops across the state. Get ready to be inspired by local creatives. Schedule online, September 13-20

Teatro ECAS presents Las Cosas Extraordinarias (Every Brilliant Thing), a play about mental illness and the lengths a six-year-old will go to for family and love, performed in Spanish, with English simulcast translations over headsets. Providence, tickets online, September 12-14

One of the most prestigious nautical events in country, the Newport International Boat Show transforms the City by the Sea into a mariner’s dream, with shiny new vessels dockside and a showcase of products, services, seminars, and more on land. September 12-15, Newport

THURSDAY, September 12

Whalers hosts the Wakefield Books Adult Book Fair – it’s like the Scholastic book fairs of your youth but no Captain Underpants and you can grab a tasty craft beer while browsing great reads right in the taproom. 5pm, Peace Dale

Health meets fun in the park during the WBNA Wellness Fair, as part of the Farm Fresh RI Armory Farmer's Market. Mini bodywork sessions, acupuncture treatments, free flu shots, Tai Chi, yoga, and more are all part of the experience. 3-7pm, Providence

SATURDAY, September 14

Take in the scenic coastline of Island Park and The Hummocks during the Sakonnet Coastal Bike & Stroll, a rare opportunity to pedal or walk along a car-free, family-friendly route, with donations supporting Bike Newport advocacy. Register online, Portsmouth

Step back in time during Jonnycake Day at Coggeshall Farm. Learn about the Rhode Island culinary staple, try your hand at grinding corn, play themed games, and experience cooking demonstrations in the historic farmhouse. Tickets online, Bristol 

SUNDAY, September 15

Bristol PorchFest takes over High Street with bands performing on unconventional stages: neighbors’ porches. Crowds flock to front yards and the closed-to-traffic street to catch the lineup of live music, followed by an after part in Unity Park. 3-6pm, Bristol

A tribute to all things grilled, the End of Summer Sizzler, sponsored by The Bay, is the Tiverton Farmers Market’s way of celebrating the season’s last hurrah with all the fresh meat, seafood, and vegetables you can ask for, along with live music. 10am-2pm, Tiverton
