Wayfinder Newport’s Comeback Following Devastating Fire

A coastal hotel rises from the ashes with fresh design and local flair

Posted

Wayfinder Newport has risen from the ashes – quite literally. After a devastating fire in 2022 forced its closure, the beloved hotel has reopened its doors, ready to welcome guests once again. The comprehensive renovation upholds a contemporary coastal design and through local partnerships, creates a unique and immersive experience that captures Rhode Island’s laid-back, free-spirited vibe.

Phil Hospod, founder and CEO of Dovetail + Co, shares insights about the rebuilding process. "The challenge was that we had so recently renovated and received the property so well that we had to fight our natural instinct to try new design ideas," Hospod explains. "On the plus side, we were able to build entirely new. And there’s always something nice about new construction."

Initially launched in 2020, Wayfinder Newport quickly gained a loyal following for its fresh take on Newport living. The renovated property now features 187 rooms, including 30 spacious suites, and a variety of amenities designed to enhance the guest experience, such as the B-Side lobby coffee bar, the Pool Shack cocktail bar, an outdoor pool and party deck, and Nomi Park, an on-site restaurant offering bar service this season. "We’re excited to open the bar at Nomi Park this season," Hospod says. "Guests can enjoy cocktails, beverages, and bar bites while making connections with some new faces in Newport."

The hotel's design reflects a deep connection to the local community, featuring over 1,000 pieces of art by Rhode Island artists, including a poolside mural by Sean Spellman and works by Jenny Brown, Mea Duke, Catherine Druken, Jenn Shore, and Liz Kelley. This showcase of local talent complements custom furniture from Rhode Island’s O&G Studio and locally sourced antiques.

In addition to its artistic focus, Wayfinder Newport emphasizes local partnerships. Guests can indulge in bath amenities from Newport’s Shore Soap Co. and enjoy luxe terry and bed throws by Matouk. Live poolside music, night swims, and arcade pop-ups are all designed to engage visitors. Guests also benefit from exclusive perks offered by local businesses, including Newport Classic Cars, Newport Helicopter Tours, Newport Vineyards, Newport Classic Yacht Co., and Rogue Island Comedy Fest.

Community engagement remains central to Wayfinder Newport's philosophy. "It’s been wonderful to see the community support and positive encouragement along the way," Hospod remarks. He also highlights the support from locals as the hotel prepares to reopen. "I’ve been getting personal messages from locals wishing us well and asking how they can help. It really feels like everyone wants to see us succeed." For more information, visit WayfinderHotels.com.
