Celebrate the Revitalization of Eagle Square Bridge at the Pocket Park Party

A community event to honor the transformation of a key Providence landmark

On September 21, the Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council (WRWC) invites the community to celebrate a significant transformation in the heart of Providence. Eagle Square Pocket Park will come alive with music, art, and activities to celebrate the revitalization of the Eagle Square Bridge.

The Pocket Park Party promises something for everyone. Attendees can admire a stunning new 100-foot mural and unwind on custom-designed community seating crafted by local youth through DownCity Design. In addition to light refreshments, attendees can enjoy a group bike ride – FAM JAM – around the Olneyville neighborhood, thanks to a partnership with the Providence Streets Coalition.

The restoration of the Eagle Square Bridge was funded by a $5,000 Rhode Island Streets Transformation Project grant, supporting initiatives that foster physical activity and community connections through thoughtful design. WRWC, alongside teams from DownCity Design, led the efforts to transform this key pedestrian space.

“We absolutely love working with DownCity Design, and this is by far our best collaboration yet,” said Alicia J. Lehrer, executive director of WRWC. “It’s incredible to see two unique design cohorts come together to transform the Eagle Square Bridge into a place for learning, socializing, and connecting.”

Once a forgotten structure, the Eagle Square Bridge has evolved into a vital part of the Woonasquatucket Greenway, connecting Providence neighborhoods and encouraging active transportation. Closed to motor traffic since 2020, the bridge has become a dynamic space for the community.

“The before and after speaks for itself,” remarked Peter Dear, WRWC greenway manager. “The Eagle Square Bridge is now a bright and dynamic space for everyone to enjoy, adding vibrancy to the Woonasquatucket River Greenway.” The WRWC invites everyone to come celebrate this remarkable transformation of Eagle Square Bridge from 1-4pm and enjoy a day of fun and creativity.
